Background

Libertas School of Memphis is a Montessori, liberal arts public charter school serving a historic but marginalized neighborhood in Memphis. Our mission is to be a school for human flourishing: cultivating minds, hands, and hearts for lives of wonder, work, and love. 

We offer students a rich, rigorous, and personalized education through the learning method of Dr. Maria Montessori, liberal arts and Core Knowledge, and the best practices of high-performing urban schools. We foster a culture of character and excellence. And we are an attachment village of supports between school, families, and our community. We serve approximately 450 children ages 3 to 11 (PreK through 5th grade) in inclusive, multi-age classrooms.

 

Role summary and information

  • Key function: The school custodian plays an essential role in maintaining the building and physical plant and supporting a learning environment that promotes health, attitude and pride of students. In addition to regular building maintenance functions, the school custodian provides direct support to classroom teachers in set up and maintenance of furniture and equipment. The school custodian also serves as a role model for students by displaying a professional, courteous, and helpful nature. The school custodian also assists in campus security as necessary. 
  • This role roughly follows the school calendar. Hours are 3:00-8:00pm during the school year with abbreviated work and scheduling outside the school year. 
  • May assist with periodic school events outside of the normal schedule.
  • Measures of success for position include customer satisfaction among teachers and families; accurate entry of attendance; timely and thorough completion of tasks; performance evaluations; and related indicators.
  • Reports to: Operations Manager
  • Key relationships: students, families, Operations Manager, Director of Operations, additional staff

 

Supervision and Controls over the Work: The school custodian receives day-to-day direction from the school administrator(s) and receives specific performance requirements from the building engineer for maintenance/custodial. The school custodian operates within district and school policies and procedures, and by applying acceptable custodial standards, Labor and Industry standards, and OSHA standards.

 

General Expectations

  • Physical demands: Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read a variety of documents; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment; sitting for extended periods of time; bending, kneeling or stooping, reaching overhead to store or retrieve materials, and walking.
  • Friendly, welcoming approach. 
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with school site staff and families.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Key Responsibilities

Cleaning Functions: 

  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, refinish floors; clean, dust, and polish furniture; wash windows and walls; clean restrooms; dispose of rubbish, change lights, etc.; make certain all areas of the building are kept in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition according to industry and/or district standards. 
  • Pick up litter within the schools and on school grounds. 
  • Assure safety during inclement weather, including shoveling, salting, providing slip protection on wet floors, securing against wind damage, snow removal from roofs, removing debris from downspouts when clogged, etc. 
  • Applies cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures. 
  • Adheres to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment. 
  • Performs minor repair and maintenance as authorized by district maintenance staff. 
  • Removes extraneous dirt/markings from interior and exterior vertical/horizontal surfaces (walls, doors, etc.). 
  • Advise building principal/Maintenance Department on matters relating to mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance. 
  • Performs minor painting to walls, rails, playgrounds and other areas of the school.
  • Keeps all equipment in a good state of repair and cleanliness. 

 

Administrative Functions 

  • Initiate maintenance service requests according to district procedures. Follows through to assure that maintenance is performed in a timely manner. 
  • Maintains inventory and requests cleaning supplies and materials needed to accomplish assigned tasks. 
  • Maintains awareness of energy conservation and makes suggestions of methods and procedures to consider energy.
  • Secures equipment and supplies and protects against loss, theft, or abuse. 
  • Required to follow Board policies and stay abreast of updates and changes. 

 

Safety and Security 

  • Periodically inspects, or otherwise maintains awareness of, facility and equipment to detect and prevent injuries or damage. 
  • Secures school building to ensure proper building security at all times. Lock, secure and code out building at end of shift. 
  • Verifies that emergency equipment is maintained and repaired as need be. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications and Traits

  • High school diploma
  • Successful background check clearance.
  • Love of learning. Flexibility, initiative, and personal responsibility to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate and maintain good working relations with all school employees, vendors, contractors, and public entities. 
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions requiring the ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work while responding to interruptions and changing priorities. 
  • Warm and firm demeanor.

 

Compensation

  • Part-time, hourly role equivalent to $15 per hour
